Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 4 requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a WES or ICAS evaluation.

  • Essay

  • Applicants are required to submit answers to the following questions in the form of a 300-500 word essay.

    1. Statement of Interest
    What does the term “international development” mean to you? How do your interests, skills and previous activities make you a good fit for this program? How will this program prepare you for your career?

    2. Travel and International Experience
    Practitioners are often required to work with individuals of different cultures and nationalities and/or travel to different countries. Please describe any experiences you have had where you had to work with people from cultures other than your own and how this experience enhanced your desire to work in the International Development field.

    3. Languages
    The international nature of development works often requires languages other than English. Please describe any skills you have speaking, reading and/or writing languages other than English.

    4. Full-time and Summer Employment
    Describe recent full-time employment, if any, and summer activities for the past three summers, especially any experience with children, youth, the elderly or other vulnerable persons. Also note any extracurricular activities, including when you were involved in the activity, extent of involvement and level achieved. This document is available in alternate format upon request.

PATHWAYS OUT TO ANOTHER PROGRAM:

TO A PARTNER INSTITUTION

Master of Business Administration

Humber and the University of Incarnate Word (UIW) have entered into an agreement to facilitate the transfer of students from select graduate certificate programs:

  • Global Business Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Public Relations
  • International Development

for a block transfer of six (6) credit hours into UIW's Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.  Students will be required to complete 24 credits to earn the degree.  Applicants may have the option to apply for a General MBA or a MBA with a specific concentration in Finance or Marketing.

Applicants will be considered for acceptance into the MBA based on requirements as set forth in the UIW Graduate Bulletin for international students including:

  • successful completion of one of the above graduate certificate programs with a GPA of 70% or higher;
  • submission of an official Humber transcript;
  • submission of proof of completion of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university.

Master of Business Administration

Humber and Centenary University have entered into an agreement to facilitate the transfer of Humber graduates with appropriate prerequisite qualifications and grades for advanced standing into Centenary University.  

Graduates with a GPA of 3.0 or 75% in one of Humber's Graduate Certificates:

  • Human Resource Management
  • International Development
  • Marketing Management
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Public Relations
  • Global Business Management
  • Public Administration

may receive up to 6 credits towards Centenary's Masters of Business Adminstration (MBA) program.  Thirty-three (33) remaining credits may be required for program completion.  Final advanced standing granted to an applicant requires an assessment of transcripts and electives taken.

Humber applicants are required to submit the following to Centenary:

  • a completed application form (with essay where applicable) along with the application fee
  • official Humber transcript sent directly to Centenary from Humber
  • verification of high school graduation
  • Letter of Recommendation from a Humber Program Coordinator, specifying why the student is a good candidate for the program.

MBA - Community Economic Development

Humber and Cape Breton University have partnered for the purpose of offering a masters degree completion option to students of both the International Development and Business Management - Entrepreneurial Enterprise graduate certificate programs.  

Students completing these programs with a minimum grade of B+ or 75% in each course will receive up to a maximum of 12 credits transfer towards the 48 credits required for CBU's MBA-CED program and will also receive an exemption of the GMAT test requirement towards admission.

The CBU MBA-CED program requires the completion of a minimum of 36 credits of course work after successful completion of one of the Humber programs specified above.  This normally requires a minimum of three semesters of full time study to complete.  On a part time basis, the program can be completed over three intensive residencies in the month of July.  Students can take classes for all required coursese by spending three July sessions on campus.  Alternatively, the program is also offered on select weekends in Edmonton, Saskatoon and Toronto.

A number of CBU courses are available by distance including some of the required courses for the MBA-CED program and may, in some instances, be the ony offering of that particular course that year.  CBU distance courses can be used to fulfill the credit residency requirement.

Graduates of Humber's International Development Graduate Certificate, with a minimum B (73%) GPA, who have been accepted into Royal Roads University's Master of Arts in Global Leadership (MAGL) or Master of Arts in Human Security and Peace Building (MAHSPB), can be granted nine (9) elective credits toward their master’s program.

To be eligible for transfer credit, students must successfully complete the following Humber courses:

  • BUS 5012: Introduction to Development
  • BUS 5013:  Management Skills for International Development
  • BUS 5014:  Project Design and Planning
  • BUS 5528:  Humanitarian Assistance
  • BUS 5501:  Issues in International Development

Both the MAGL and MAHSPB programs follow a blended learning model and are offered primarily through online study combined with mandatory on-site residencies.

How to Apply

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program. Humber’s International Development graduate certificate program is designed for individuals who want to see the world and make a difference within it. This program provides graduates with the skills and knowledge required to manage, develop and grow international development and disaster relief projects anywhere in the world. Graduates may find themselves in some of the most difficult environments in the world, or they may work in developed countries changing policies to make a difference in the Global South. Faculty are chosen for their field expertise and experience in international development – most continue to work with numerous international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or United Nations agencies while teaching at Humber part time.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Contribute directly to project planning and the articulation of project goals having national or regional objectives, including the preparation or modification of proposals and bids, and the negotiation of program/project elements and budgets.

  • Implement strategies to secure project funding.

  • Establish administrative systems and procedures relating to program approval processes, reporting systems, technical assistance requirements, procurement, international travel and project termination/evacuation.

  • Assist in the co-operative management with partners of specific program and project elements, including the development of implementation plans and strategies, in-course project monitoring and evaluation, and project modification as required.

  • Assume responsibility for the management of key financial and physical resources associated with projects, including planning, procurement, monitoring and reporting on progress, reviewing and revising initial plans based on in-project performance, and preparing reports for further analysis and review.

  • Demonstrate effective human resource management and labour relations skills relating to projects, including the recruitment and supervision of project personnel and effective interaction with external specialists or consultants acting under contract.

  • Perform statistical analysis in a business environment.

  • Interpret and apply national and international regulations.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of individual and corporate ethics in a business environment, and the importance of effective leadership and team-building in joint ventures based on international co-operation.

  • Communicate and work effectively in cross-cultural environments.

  • Use industry specific language to describe challenges, solutions and opportunities across the ID arena.

Work Placement

You will gain industry experience and build your international development network with an eight-week (minimum) work placement within the development/humanitarian sectors. Many students choose to do this placement overseas but it can also be done here in Canada.

With the program co-ordinator’s support, placements are found through a combination of your interests and contacts with graduates and industry partners. The educational foundation for the work placement includes learning how to optimize resumés, LinkedIn profiles and cover letters, as well as covering the broad set of skills needed to be comfortable and safe working outside of Canada.

The Humber Experience

The International Development Institute

Humber is home to the International Development Institute (IDI), an institute with over 30 years of international development experience that brings new ideas from the field to the classroom. Projects that Humber graduates have been involved in have focused on building the capacity of Southern partner institutions in a range of sectors, including entrepreneurship, small enterprise development, microfinance, public management, applied technology and vocational education.

Initiatives and Events

IDI initiatives also include events such as the IDI Symposium held at Lakeshore Campus involving faculty, students and many key representatives from the NGO industry. Students participate in breakout sessions alongside NGOs to discuss current international development issues. International Development Week is another enriching experience held annually at Humber and organized by students. This week long event includes industry guest speakers, a marketplace developed with industry partners as well as interactive workshops and events.

Your Career

Agencies in Canada and abroad are in need of skilled individuals to write policy, advocate to developed nations’ governments and to manage programs around the world. In addition, global disasters, conflict and climate change create an enormous need for humanitarian assistance and for the people who can deliver it.

Our program will prepare you for a variety of career paths. As most international development work is contract based, one can expect to have a variety of positions over a multi-year career. Some of our recent graduates have gone on to be:

  • liaison to the US Mission at World Food Programme
  • relief co-ordinator for Samaritan’s Purse
  • communications officer for World Vision Canada
  • program manager for a major UK charity
  • founder of their own NGO

The potential is limitless.
