Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 3 requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
      • Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

    or

    or

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a WES or ICAS evaluation.

Humber graduates from the program who meet the requirements may be eligible for admission to the Leicester programs.  Acceptance into Leicester's programmes shall remain at the absolute discretion of Leicester and shall be subject to an applicant meeting all conditions of any offer that is made. Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice (Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast)

Applicants from Humber College who meet the requirements will be eligible for admission to Griffith University (Mt. Gravatt and Gold Coast) with full block transfer credit, provided all other entrance criteria are met and space remains available in the related program of study.

Law LLB

Humber students who have successfully completed a Diploma in any field at Humber College and meet the requirements, will be considered for admission into the University of Gloucestershire's Law LLB (Hons) (2-year fast track). International students should demonstrate and must provide evidence that they have attained a level of English Equivalent to IELTS 6.0 overall. Business Bachelor of Business Administration

Students who complete a 2 year diploma at Humber will be granted 60 credit hours toward the completion of a bachelor degree program at Davenport University. You will need to complete a minimum of 60 credit hours (approximately two years of full-time attendance) to meet residency and program requirements and to complete your bachelor degree program. Students must complete a minimum total of 120 semester credit hours to earn a bachelor degree. The total credit hours will include the completed 2 year diploma classes plus any courses completed through Davenport University.

Bachelor of Applied Management

Graduates of any two-year diploma program at Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 70% or greater will be eligible to enter year three of the four-year Bachelor of Applied Management (BAM) at the University of New Brunswick, Saint John. 

Depending on the diploma program, students may be exempted from study in certain courses and therefore, requested to take alternate courses offered by the Faculty of Business.

How to Apply

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program. Humber’s Law Clerk diploma program provides in-depth training delivered by experienced professionals. Learn from practising lawyers and law clerks who will give you the inside scoop on the current trends and opportunities in the field. As a law clerk, working under the direct supervision of a lawyer, you will be an important part of the team that allows the lawyer to succeed. 

Your law clerk education includes courses on contract, tort, real estate, corporate and family law, as well as in litigation, legal research, transcribing legal dictation, wills and estates, and more. Your solid knowledge on diverse areas of law, competence in a range of legal and court procedures, and strong written and oral communication skills will make you a valuable team player in the profession.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Support the needs of clients and legal professionals through the use of accurate terminology and professional communication strategies, both orally and in writing.
  • Complete all work within routine and unexpected time lines and limitation periods within the legal environment.
  • Use current and relevant electronic and print resources, within the legal environment, to conduct legal research, to assist with file and evidentiary management, to facilitate communication and generate legal documentation, complying with current regulations and procedures.
  • Research and summarize the presenting legal issues, applying knowledge of substantive law, to support the legal team.
  • Apply rules of procedure to support best legal practices.
  • Conduct oneself professionally in adherence to the guidelines of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
  • Carry out clerical and administrative duties for the operation of a variety of legal environments.
  • Outline strategies for ongoing professional development to ensure continuing competence as a Law Clerk.
  • Act equitably and justly with diverse populations*.
  • Provide support for legal professionals in courts and administrative tribunals within the legal system.

Work Placement

Students must complete a 133 hour work placement.  The unpaid placement is completed during Semester 4.  All courses from Semesters 1 to 3 must be completed before enrolling in the field placement in Semester 4.  Working with the field placement advisor, students are actively involved in pursuing placement opportunities. In addition, students are expected to market themselves to prospective employers and are free to initiate their own placements.

If you’re interested in taking this program but have no previous experience or knowledge of Canadian and Ontario law, don’t worry. While a background in law is a benefit in this program, it is not a requirement. Rather, ask yourself these questions if you are thinking about applying:

  • Are you independent and able to work with little supervision?
  • Are you detail-oriented?
  • Do you have strong written and verbal communication skills?

And, through the required work placement, you’ll gain industry experience at prominent private law firm or government agency.

Employment prospects are excellent as the Toronto legal sector employs more than half of Ontario’s law clerks.  There are a significant number of opportunities to work as a law clerk or legal assistant at both public and private firms. In addition to law firms, you can also pursue law clerk opportunities in government agencies, courts, financial and insurance firms, real estate companies, and corporate head offices.

Under a lawyer’s direction, you’ll play a key role in supporting a legal practice by writing and performing administrative tasks including maintaining and filing corporate documents, completing real estate transactions, drafting contracts, conducting title searches and engaging in legal research. In a litigation office, you’ll also have the opportunity to interview clients and witnesses, and accompany lawyers to meetings and court appearances.
